"Bettering the Instruction" Shakespeare Conference

“Bettering the Instruction”: A One-Day Conference on Teaching Shakespeare In the Secondary School

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

From student teacher to classroom veteran, most of us know that Shakespeare is sometimes a hard sell to students. His language can be difficult, his ideas can seem very remote, and to make matters worse, our culture often reinforces the idea that he is just “too hard.”And yet we also know that great riches, of language, of character, and of ideas, are contained in his works.

The trick is finding out how to inspire our students to find these riches! That is where this conference comes in. Our object is to create a day-long forum focused specifically on teaching—and enjoying—Shakespeare in the 7-12 classroom: What are the best practices and secret strategies that really work? What can we learn from expert colleagues in other districts and from the faculty at SUNY New Paltz?
