Comprehensive Exam Reminder

If you intend to take (or re-take) the Comps this fall, you MUST register for ENG 599.

The last day to add 599 without charge is September 4; during the week of September 7 a fee of $20 will be imposed by the Registrar. The last possible date for adding 599 is September 11.

If you have already submitted the form to Dr. Kempton, 599 should appear on my.newpaltz as one of your fall courses. If it does not, please let him know.

Ethel Wesdorp Wins Presidential Service Award

Ethel Wesdorp, the beloved secretary of the English Department and a face familiar to students, faculty, and staff who make their way to the 7th floor of JFT, was honored at the annual faculty-staff picnic on May 19. Ethel picked up a coveted Presidential Service Award in recognition of her outstanding service to the English Department and  the College at large.

What we offer
Chronogram/Luminary Publishing offers opportunities for its interns to develop writing and editing skills and to write numerous articles. In Chronogram and other Luminary Publishing publications.

What we’re looking for
We are looking for self-motivated people with strong research, fact-checking, and writing skills, but prior journalistic experience is not required. Some familiarity with the Hudson Valley is helpful. Please send three writing samples, preferably published clips.

What we expect
Although the focus for all interns is on editing and writing, they do have some administrative responsibilities. These include occasional transcription, typing, or data entry jobs.

Interns are required to work in our Kingston office 35 hours a week.
The internship is unsalaried.

Intern duties
Editorial interns will work with the editor and be assigned work within the framework of the following duties: writing, manuscript evaluation, fact checking, proofreading, copy editing, research, and website updating.

SUNY New Paltz Playwrights Awarded

Larry Carr’s short dramatic play, “Porch by Moonlight” has been named “Best Play of the Festival” in the April 2009 YMCA Playwriting Festival in New York City. Nine plays were produced in this festival, the proceeds of which went to YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. Carr (English Department) teaches Creative and Dramatic Writing.

Jacqueline Ahl (Special Programs) has recently won has won the 2008 New Play Contest, for her one-act, “Fear Itself” at the Tin Ceiling Theater, St. Louis, Missouri. The play will be produced as part of their 2009 season. Tin Ceiling focuses primarily on new plays, and has been dubbed “punk rock theater” for their unusual, edgy, work. This is the third award for Ms. Ahl’s play, including: Best New Play of 2005 (one-act division) from the Brevard Little Theatre, North Carolina and Honorable Mention, 77th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing competition (2008), Stage Play Script Category.

John Bray, a graduate of the Creative and Dramatic Writing Program at SUNY New Paltz, received glowing press reviews and sold-out houses, for his recently produced Off-off-Broadway play, “Trickster at the Gate” at the At Hand Theatre Company. Another of his plays, Goodnight, Lovin’ Trail” will soon receive its fourth NYC production.

New Paltz Alum Author Meri Weiss Up for Literary Award

The Lambda Literary Awards seek to recognize excellence in the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender literature. Each year, over 80 judges — writers, booksellers, librarians, journalists — assess the entries in more than 20 categories. This year, New Paltz alum Meri Weiss was nominated for an award in the “Debut Fiction” category for her novel, Closer to Fine. Congrats, Meri!

Celebration of Writing Day

The University Writing Board would like you to encourage your students to submit their work for The Celebration of Writing Day (COW). Please encourage any students from the current or previous semesters to participate. Students are asked to submit writing samples and read an excerpt of their writing at the event. Awards of distinction will be presented are given for the best writing in each category. The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2009. The Celebration of Writing will take place on May 8, 2008. We encourage submissions from students in all disciplines, including science, technology, social science, art, history, education, or other disciplines where writing provides a necessary analysis tool. We welcome critical reviews of arts and cultural activity, social and political analyses, news stories, book reviews, and science reports. Of course, we welcome creative fiction, drama and verse.
